SEED’s PAC (polyanionic cellulose) and CMC (carboxymethyl cellulose) are the main binders and thickeners in toothpaste formulations, creating a smooth and even paste texture.
CMC provides exceptional water-binding capacity, controlling moisture levels within the toothpaste matrix. The pseudoplastic rheology of CMC and PAC solutions creates ideal toothpaste texture—the paste is firm enough to retain shape on the toothbrush without slumping or dripping, yet softens during brushing to spread easily across tooth surfaces and between teeth.
SEED’s HEC produces crystal-clear gels that showcase colored phases, sparkles, or other visual elements popular in children’s toothpastes and specialty products. HEC demonstrates superior stability over extended shelf life, maintaining clarity, viscosity, and product integrity under various storage conditions including temperature fluctuations common in consumer use.

Technical Specifications

CMC is typically used at 0.7-1.5% in standard paste toothpastes, providing optimal binding and texture. PAC is used at 0.6-1.3% for similar applications, with specific selection based on formulation requirements. HEC is used at 0.8-1.8% in clear gel toothpastes, with levels adjusted to achieve desired clarity and viscosity. Combination systems using multiple cellulose derivatives at lower individual levels can provide synergistic benefits.

They also impart appropriate viscoelasticity and shape to the toothpaste, ensuring it forms a strip-like consistency with a good framework, adheres to the toothbrush without collapsing or thinning. Therefore, cellulose ethers used in toothpaste must not only maintain the uniformity and fluidity of the paste but also possess the properties of water retention and increased viscosity, while meeting the requirements of filling speed, that is, maintaining a lower consistency during the filling process and a higher, more suitable consistency after a certain storage period.
