Cellulose ether for Leather

Leather Application

Seed’s specialized cellulose derivatives provide essential binding, coating, finishing, and surface modification functionality in leather processing and finishing operations, enabling production of high-quality leather products with superior surface characteristics, enhanced durability, improved aesthetics, and consistent quality. Our MCC (Microcrystalline Cellulose) products deliver reliable performance across diverse leather applications from natural leather finishing to synthetic leather manufacturing.
MCC for leather is available in technical and cosmetic grades meeting purity requirements for leather finishing applications. Products are free from contaminants that could cause color variation, staining, or processing issues.

Key Performance Benefits

SEED’s MCC (Microcrystalline Cellulose) serves as a multifunctional additive in leather finishing formulations, providing unique combinations of properties that enhance finish quality, durability, and appearance. MCC acts as an effective rheology modifier in leather coating and finishing suspensions, creating controlled viscosity. Thixotropic finishes remain stable in containers and spray equipment without settling, flow smoothly during application under shear forces of spraying or rolling, then quickly recover viscosity after application to prevent running, sagging, or penetrating excessively into leather grain.
MCC provides excellent matting effects in leather finishes, creating controlled gloss levels from deep matte to semi-gloss surfaces depending on concentration and particle characteristics. The matting mechanism involves light scattering by MCC particles at the finish surface, producing a natural effect. MCC reinforces finished films, distributing stresses during leather flexing and preventing crack formation or finish delamination.

Technical Specifications

Our MCC for leather applications is available in various particle sizes and morphologies optimized for specific leather finishing needs. Standard grades have average particle sizes ranging from 20 to 100 microns, with finer grades (20-40 microns) used in smooth finishes and coarser grades (60-100 microns) selected for pronounced matting effects or textured finishes.

Product models for Leather applications

SEED’s MCC is an extremely fine, inert powder whose particles effectively penetrate and fill the loose fiber interstices in leather, increasing fullness. It makes the leather fuller, firmer, and more elastic, overcoming defects such as looseness and thinness, thereby improving the grade and hand feel of the leather. It helps fill irregular surface depressions and protrusions, resulting in a smoother, finer grain. By reinforcing the support between fibers, it effectively reduces or prevents “loose grain” (i.e., wrinkling of the leather surface).
