Seed’s comprehensive cellulose derivative portfolio addresses the distinct requirements of both water-based and oil-based paint systems. Our HEC, MHEC, EC, and CAB products provide optimal rheology modification, film formation, and performance enhancement tailored to each solvent system’s unique characteristics.
Our water-based products demonstrate excellent freeze-thaw stability, maintaining performance after multiple freeze-thaw cycles common during storage and transportation. They are compatible with all standard coating additives including dispersants, defoamers, biocides, and coalescents. Oil-based products show excellent chemical resistance to many solvents, acids, and bases, providing durable protective coatings.

Key Performance Benefits

For water-based paint systems, our HEC (Hydroxyethyl Cellulose) and MHEC (Methyl Hydroxyethyl Cellulose) deliver superior thickening efficiency with excellent clarity, maintaining paint color brilliance and enabling formulation of high-quality clear and pigmented coatings. These non-ionic cellulose ethers provide stable viscosity across wide pH ranges (2-12), offering formulation flexibility unavailable with pH-sensitive thickeners. Unlike HPMC, HEC does not exhibit thermal gelation, maintaining consistent viscosity at elevated temperatures encountered during manufacturing, storage, and application.
For oil-based paint systems, our EC (Ethyl Cellulose) and CAB (Cellulose Acetate Butyrate) serve as essential film-forming agents and rheology modifiers compatible with organic solvent systems. EC dissolves in various organic solvents including alcohols, esters, ketones, and aromatic hydrocarbons, providing tough, flexible films with excellent adhesion to wood, metal, and other substrates. The thermoplastic nature enables hot-melt processing applications and thermal forming capabilities.

Technical Specifications

Our water-based paint grade HEC is available in viscosity ranges from 1,000 to 6,500 mPa·s (1% solution, 25°C), with MHEC available from 10,000 to 100,000 mPa·s (2% solution, 20°C).
For oil-based systems, EC is available in various ethoxy content levels (44-52%) and viscosity grades (7-100 cP in 5% toluene-ethanol solution). CAB grades vary in acetyl/butyryl content and molecular weight, with designations indicating approximate composition and viscosity characteristics.
