Oil Drilling

Cellulose ether for Oil Drilling

Oil Drilling Application

Seed’s oil field-grade cellulose derivatives provide essential viscosity control, fluid loss reduction, shale stabilization, and rheology modification in drilling fluid systems, enabling efficient drilling operations with superior wellbore stability, enhanced cutting removal, controlled fluid loss, and optimized drilling performance. Our HEC, PAC, and CMC products deliver reliable performance across diverse drilling environments from shallow water wells to deep, high-temperature formations and challenging shale sequences.
All products are tested for viscosity contribution, fluid loss control, salt tolerance, temperature stability, and compatibility with drilling fluid systems.

Key Performance Benefits

SEED’s HEC creates appropriate drilling fluid viscosity and rheological properties that suspend drill cuttings during circulation, prevent cuttings settling when circulation stops, transport cuttings to surface for removal, and maintain wellbore cleanliness throughout drilling operations. HEC provides exceptional salt tolerance, maintaining viscosity and fluid loss control in high-salinity environments including seawater-based muds, saturated salt drilling fluids, and formations with high formation water salinity.
Our PAC represents the premium cellulose derivative for demanding drilling operations in reactive shale formations, high-temperature wells, and environmentally sensitive areas requiring minimum formation damage. PAC provides exceptional shale stabilization through multiple mechanisms. The anionic polymer chains adsorb onto clay mineral surfaces, creating repulsive electrostatic forces that prevent clay swelling and dispersion.
Our CMC (Carboxymethyl Cellulose) provides cost-effective viscosity and fluid loss control in standard drilling applications where the enhanced performance of PAC isn’t required or where budget considerations favor economical solutions. CMC is particularly valuable in shallow drilling, water well drilling, and mineral exploration drilling where less demanding conditions don’t justify premium polymer costs.

Technical Specifications

HEC is used at 0.5-3.0 lb/bbl (1.4-8.6 kg/m³) with 1.0-2.0 lb/bbl typical for most freshwater and seawater systems. PAC is used at 0.5-4.0 lb/bbl depending on grade and performance requirements, with 1.5-3.0 lb/bbl common in shale drilling and high-performance applications. CMC is used at 1.0-4.0 lb/bbl in standard drilling fluid systems.
