Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a water-soluble polymer, which is prepared by the alcoholysis of polyvinyl acetate. It is odorless, tasteless, and appears as a white powder or granule.
It has excellent water solubility, film-forming property, adhesion and oil resistance, as well as good biocompatibility, thus being widely used in industries such as industry, construction, textile, daily chemicals and medicine. In industrial applications, PVA models are usually classified by degree of polymerization and degree of alcoholysis. The series with 88% alcoholysis degree is soluble in water at room temperature, while the series with 99% alcoholysis degree requires dissolution in hot water at high temperature. Different models are suitable for various scenarios including adhesives, textile sizing, mortar additives and medical membrane materials.
Common SEED PVA grades include 0588, 1788, 1799and 2488. The applications differ depending on the degree of polymerization.
In mortar and putty, the common grade is 2488. When purchasing PVA, it’s important to consult with SEED sales personnel about the mesh size. Grades like 160 mesh and 120 mesh are suitable for mortar, putty, applying mortar, roughening, and even making adhesives. These higher mesh grades are more expensive.
Generally, 80 mesh is chosen.
